If you develop your own film, you know it’s not uncommon to come across these chemical anomalies and light aberrations. Every roll has at least one. Most bulk processing facilities trim and discard these non–images as the general public doesn’t care to have them mixed in with their retirement party photos.
You’ll find these are even more common when testing old cameras, using expired film, and experimenting with alternative developing processes—all areas in which I would have had far less experience if not for my limited funding and resulting resourcefulness. For nearly 20 years, I’ve continued to collect these throwaways that live within the margins, intending to bring them new life and consideration [inadvertently anthropomorphizing them in the process].
What is this? Is this a space, is it not? What exists here and what is disruptive? where is the tension.
I’m interested in how our minds often create narratives based on minimally recognizable visual input and react deeply to color and composition alone; liken these to abstract impressionism or a photographic Rorschach test. How do you feel? What color are you?
